Meet the Artist, Sandy Chaves
A Californian from her early days, Sandy Chaves is a lifelong, self-taught artist. Born with a great eye for color and line, and an incessant need to doodle, Sandy wishes she could now reclaim all the saleable art long since discarded on phone pads and cocktail napkins.
From her early days of writing and illustrating stories, through her formal education at Berkeley and UCLA, and on to the present when, as owner of Perfect Spot Tours, she sends lucky travelers on adventures throughout Asia, Sandy has been a not-so-closet artist. Her India ink, her sumptuous water colors and her fine sable brushes accompany her wherever she goes. That is why her whimsical paintings will range in subject from the shuttered peeling alleyways of Italy to the melodic, bustling markets of Asia, from the sensuous beauty of Balinese women to the well-worn cityscapes of Los Angeles by the ocean.
Her art is filled with quirky remembrances, poetic reveries, moments frozen in time, and the beauty that lurks unseen in ordinary surroundings. An accomplished photographer, Sandy's art is often a distillation of what she sees through the lens, isolated from its larger context, suffused with the conversation that goes on between her and the blank paper.
Sometimes abstract, sometimes reality-based in a fanciful, eccentric and capricious way, Sandy's original copyrighted works are created to give many years of pleasure. Close attention is paid to the archival permanence of both color and paper. She uses Winsor & Newton fine English watercolors and gouache, known for their brightness, permanence and lightfastness, and most paintings are on the highest quality Arches paper, produced in France since 1492 and renowned for its beauty and performance. All matting is museum quality and acid-free.
Sandy's art displays a spontaneity and freshness that bespeaks her self-training. Her work is represented in both private and corporate collections, and she has participated in solo and group shows. She has also designed logos and graphic art for public and private institutions. Commissions are welcome.
